16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

16 Days of Activism

Every year, from November 25th (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to December 10th (Human Rights Day), the global community rallies together for 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

This campaign, initiated by the Center for Women's Global Leadership in 1991, seeks to raise awareness about violence against women and girls, advocate for prevention, and inspire actions to eliminate these pervasive issues.

The 16 Days of Activism campaign was founded to bring global attention to these issues and create momentum for change. The choice of the 16-day period is symbolic, connecting violence against women to the broader framework of human rights and social justice. The campaign highlights that gender-based violence is not an isolated issue but a fundamental violation of human dignity and rights.

Every year, the UN sets a theme for the 16 Days of Activism, with the 2024 campaign focusing on the UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE campaign, which calls for global action to prevent and end violence against women. The theme emphasises:

Advocacy and awareness: Encouraging individuals, organizations, and governments to advocate for comprehensive legal frameworks and support systems for survivors.

Engaging men and boys: Shifting harmful gender norms and stereotypes requires the active participation of men and boys. Engaging them as allies in the fight against GBV is essential for lasting change.

Accountability and services: Governments and institutions must strengthen accountability measures for perpetrators and provide accessible services for survivors, including legal aid, psychological support, and medical care.

Change doesn’t happen overnight, but every voice counts. Whether it’s sharing a post, signing a petition, or offering support to a survivor, your actions can contribute to a safer, more equitable world. The 16 Days of Activism provide a concentrated period to bring attention to the urgency of these issues, but the fight against gender-based violence must continue every day.

By participating in the 16 Days of Activism, you become part of a global movement working to ensure that every woman and girl can live free from violence and fear.
