Celebrating 30 Years of Grand Central

Since opening its doors in September 1996, Grand Central has become much more than a shopping destination. It’s where generations of families have celebrated milestones, caught up with friends, enjoyed special outings and created lasting memories. Over the past 30 years, Grand Central has grown alongside the Toowoomba community, evolving from a centre anchored by Target, Coles and 30 specialty stores into Toowoomba’s leading retail destination. The centre expanded throughout the late 1990s with the arrival of Myer, more than 100 additional specialty stores, a food court and cinemas, further strengthening its role at the heart of the Darling Downs.

As Toowoomba continues to grow, so too does Grand Central. The acquisition of the neighbouring Gardentown Shopping Centre in 2009 paved the way for one of regional Australia’s most significant retail redevelopments. In 2014, construction commenced on the $500 million transformation that connected the two centres and reimagined the precinct for the future. The project introduced the Retail Galleria, expanded dining and entertainment offerings, and welcomed major retailers including Kmart, BIG W and Woolworths, creating the vibrant destination enjoyed by the Toowoomba community every day.

This year marks not only 30 years since Grand Central first opened, but also 10 years since the opening of the first stage of the Retail Galleria in September 2016, ushering in a new era for Grand Central and enhancing the experience for customers and retailers alike.

To mark this milestone, we’re celebrating the customers, retailers and community members who have helped shape Grand Central’s story. This includes recognising long-serving retail team members who have dedicated more than 25 years of service to the centre. Their commitment, alongside the loyalty of our customers and retailers, has helped create the strong sense of community that defines Grand Central today.

As we celebrate 30 years of memories, we remain committed to creating memorable experiences, supporting local retailers and providing a place where our community comes together for many years to come.
