Family Picnic Fashion

There’s something hopelessly romantic about a picnic, and while your tribe may have grown from 2 to 3,4 or 5, there remains something about it that holds a sense of nostalgia and romanticism.  

With Toowoomba’s beautiful temperate climate, despite a little dip in the winter months, we are fortunate to be able to enjoy picnics all year around and with our love of al fresco dining, it’s gaining momentum as a whole lot more than a BBQ Chicken and a blanket on the ground. Once you’ve settled on the perfect location and planned your most sharable spread, the only thing left to answer is the all important question of what to wear. 

If ever there was a time for gingham and prints this is it. And yes we are talking about the men and your ‘mini me’s’  too! During the cooler months you might opt for a traditional plaid, argyle or houndstooth but with the warming of the sun, the perfect little check or paisley print is sublime.   

Dresses with feminine detail, skirts that swish and swirl; shirts that button through with sleeves rolled just below the elbow and a trouser with slouch - all ‘perfectly proper’. Ladies, if pants are more your thing, consider styling them back with the ultimate billowing blouse. If your style leans toward the clean and classic, a soft basic tee or button through remain the evergreen pieces of any wardrobe. 

When the weather cools, is there anything cuter than a perfectly cut blazer over your favourite summer dress?   Re-think your blazers and jackets in velvet and tweed, add boots and a beanie or channel your inner French girl with a beret. 

It can be tempting to wear denim to every outing if you prefer a low key vibe and when you’ve got the option of skirts, shorts, shirts and jeans, the versatility can be hard to beat. But why not switch it occasionally for the corduroy or leather equivalent for a reworking of the classics.

Classic tennis sneakers for an impromptu game of cricket, a sandal, weather permitting, or boots of your choosing; cable knit jumpers with a satin skirt and sneakers; trusty knitwear and your favourite jacket; baskets not bags, bucket and boater hats, slides over stilettos. What isn’t there to wear! 
 
For your mini’s, picnics are all about fun as they peel off the layers and their cheeks become rosy and bright. Bring a sense of adventure and fully embrace the colour wheel!  There's no questioning the importance of some practicality so have their gumboots, sneakers and hats on hand to protect them from the elements.

Keep it bright, fun and unrestrictive and let the children run free!
